Rotary Perceptions II is a new composition for 8-12 turntables and 4 performers as well as one person each who takes care of the sound diffusion. After a long phase of Rotating Surfaces, Ignaz Schick has been playing more and more with manipulated vinyl records in his live sets since around 2013. He also uses vinyl records that have been cut up or modified with adhesive tape, which the composer produces himself. However, these are usually picked up using conventional pickups and needles on the record player. With Rotary Perceptions II, Ignaz Schick is now picking up on the thread of “Rotating Surfaces” again, but this time the focus is not so much on the sound-generating objects as in his 2004-2013 set-up, but on the surfaces themselves. In the early set-ups, the surfaces had more of a function of changing or filtering the timbre of the sounding objects. This was achieved primarily through the different materiality of metal, rubber, felt or cardboard discs on the platter, which influenced the timbre but not necessarily the sound material produced per se. In this new project, it is now primarily the nature of the surface that defines the sound, and not vibrating/sounding object.

For a while now, Schick has been experimenting again with cut-outs, surface notches and stickers (adhesive tape, furniture stoppers, etc.) that are applied to records or cardboard, wood and metal discs. Rotation and scanning by pickups and (prepared) needles can be used to create cyclical, repetitive patterns and loops through to beats and grooves. Depending on the materiality of the glued-on elements and the type of pick-up or pick-up system, a wide variety of sounds and rhythmic patterns or textures can be created. Any number of rhythmic patterns and grooves can be created through the carefully selected spacing of adhesive strips, stickers or cuts. The geometry of the circle works like an analogue generator.

Each of the four turntable performers has a set of around 20-30 surfaces, which they then pick up using specially manufactured pickup systems. In addition to the prepared turntable cartridges, these can be piezo-amplified brushes, spoons, picks, plastic drinking straws etc. The four performers work with an action score graphically notated by the composer, which specifies the sequence of the surfaces, the speed, duration, dynamics and, above all, the filtering of the EQs.
